Maggie Abdo-Gomez

Candidate for VP of Academics and Scholarship

Graduated: 1983

Degrees: J.D. , LLM

What is your current or past involvement with the UFAA/GCOM, if any?

I got involved with the Gator Club in the fall of 2010. In March 2011 I became the Secretary and served in that position until June 2013. I was elected Treasurer in July 2013 and served in that position until June 2014.
I volunteered at just about every single football viewing party in 2011, 2012 and 2013 and while I did not
volunteer in 2014, I attended almost all the football viewing parties that year.

Since I became involved in the Gator Club I have volunteered at many events. The following come to mind:
2011, 2012 and 2013 – Golf Tournaments; 2013 – Tobacco Road Football kickoff party, 2011 – Habitat for
Humanity Building Blitz, 2011, 2013, 2014 and 2015 – International Gator Day. I have also attended sponsored events such as Heat basketball games, Gator Gala, Guayabere Guateque, speaker events, holiday parties
and kickoff parties.

Last, but not least, I have participated in the evaluation of the applications submitted by Dade County
students to determine scholarship recipients in 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014. I have volunteered to
participate this year (2015).

Why are you the best candidate for this position?

I believe my past involvement with the club makes me a good candidate for the board. Specifically having
been involved with the evaluation of the scholarship applications and the selection of scholarship
recipients makes me the best candidate for the position of VP of Academics and Scholarship.

Jose Miranda

Candidate for VP of Academics and Scholarship

Graduated: 2014

Degrees: B.A. Political Science

What is your current or past involvement with the UFAA/GCOM, if any?

I currently serve as the Summer Event Director for the Gator Club of Miami. As Director I was in charge of planning the Summer Picnic and Fall Kickoff event in which the recipients of last year’s scholarships were presented, recognized and celebrated along with their families for their achievements of being admitted into the University of Florida and winning the Gator Club of Miami’s Scholarship.

Why are you the best candidate for this position?

I am the best candidate for this position because this year on the board has allowed me to get an insider’s perspective of what it takes to continue the positive momentum the Scholarship has gained over the years. My experience helping raise funds for the scholarship, my assistance updating the application, and having been part of the process in every step of the way has allowed me to see what improvements were made and what further improvements could help stream line the application for future years. Additionally, my experience as an educator at the high school level and my professional circles in the education field will allow me to witness first hand the academic changes in the state of Florida and Miami Dade, thus allowing me to better contextualize what students will go through as they apply to the Scholarship. Finally, these very same professional circles will assist me in circulating the application next year so that we may yet again break records on the number of applicants, making sure we pick the best possible candidates from an expanding pool.

Which Gator Club® of Miami event(s) have you attended, if any?

During this year as Summer Event Director and general member of the Gator Club of Miami, I attended most of the Football viewing parties as either a volunteer or as a spectator. Additionally I attended several marquee events such as the Speakers Panel and the Gator Gala. I also attended several Young Alumni events such as the Toast Master’s International Workshop, and Athletics events such as the Miami Heat partnership. Overall I must have attended about 80% – 90% of the events during the year.

In what other professional or social organization(s) do you hold a leadership position or are you a member of?

I am a member of Teach For America Miami Dade as a 2014 Corps Member and a Member of United Teachers of Dade.

What is your current or past involvement with the UFAA/GCOM, if any?

Regular member

Why are you the best candidate for this position?

The VP of Athletics position has exposed me to the fellowship that has been created by the Gator Club of Miami. The football watch parties immediately drew my interest. It is a great environment to support our Alma Mater, raise money for scholarships, as well as network with fellow Alumni. I believe I am the best candidate for this position because I will continue to drive attendance of all Gator Club Sport events, as well as encourage participation for other events. This position will allow me spark the interest from Gator Alumni, which will generate active participation throughout the Gator Club as a whole, and maintain the momentum of the Gator Club of Miami. I am confident that with the support of the organization, we will recruit new members that will contribute to the organization in the long term.

Which Gator Club® of Miami event(s) have you attended, if any?

Most Football watch parties, Karaoke
